The Mission of the Church

Video: The Fishless Fisherman’s Fellowship

Does this video describe you or your church? A lot of churches are in this position: there is a lot of talk about evangelism, but nowhere near as much evangelism being done. We love to talk about lost people, their condition before God, where they will end up if they die, but we never overcome the fears and distractions in our lives to actually do the work that the Lord has left for us to do.

A faithful Christian and a faithful church fulfill the mission that the Lord gave his people. The mission we have been given is in Matthew 28:19-20.

“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always , even to the end of the age.’”

The church’s mission is summed up in these verses. We are to 1.) Go share the gospel with the lost, and 2.) Teach and equip our brother and sisters in Christ to obey and serve the Lord. How are you doing in fulfilling this mission? Usually, Christians are a lot better at encouraging their brothers and sisters, and feel that they are being faithful to the Lord. But they are forgetting that the Lord also has commanded that we share the gospel with the lost. They think the words of Jesus in Luke 9:18-21 apply to them:

“And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, "Who do the people say that I am?" 19 They answered and said, "John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again." 20 And He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered and said, "The Christ of God." 21 But He warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone

Jesus is not giving you and me this instruction! Are you telling anyone about Jesus, the Christ of God? It seems that for many Christians that the Great Commission has become the Great Omission.

The Great Commission is a command that is given to all of God’s people, not just those who want to share the gospel. You can be successful in sharing the gospel with the lost of this world. Do you believe this? If you are going into this world, and do what you can to give the word of God to others, whether that be by preaching, one-to-one conversations, handing out tracts, etc., you are being successful in the mission that God has given you. Success is not measured by the amount of converts that we make or the amount of lost people that come and visit the church for worship services. It is ALL about us obeying the Lord by doing the work of sowing the seed of the word. If we are faithful in this, the Lord will bring the increase. This is our mission! A church cannot begin to call itself “sound” in the faith if it is not fulfilling its mission of sowing the seed of the word of God and encouraging God’s people to serve and follow in the steps of Jesus Christ.

The Great Commission: An Examination of the Original Greek

I have been reading a book titled Militant Evangelism by Ray Comfort. It has had some very challenging teaching about how we as soldiers need to get into the battle against the forces of evil and wickedness in the heavenly places. I wanted to share a quote from this book that is very helpful to understand:

images“The original Greek meaning of “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15) opens up some very interesting thoughts. The word for “go” is very absorbing. It is “poreuomai,” meaning “go.” The word “all” also carries with it gripping connotations. It is “hapas,” and actually means “all.” And if that doesn’t rivet you, look closely at the word “every.” It is “pas,” and literally means “every.” So when Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature,” to be true and faithful to the original text, what He was actually saying was “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” We are so fortunate in this day and age, to have access to the original greek.”

Just to add to all of this eye-opening stuff, I would like to show you the definition of the Greek word used for “preach.”The word is “kêrussô,” and it literally means “to preach or proclaim with your mouth.”  This shows us that the Gospel is a spoken message. This flies in the face of all of the “evangelism methods” that are in the church today, such as friendship evangelism, being a good example,  and inviting people to church. Neither of these are evangelism if you never open up your mouth to proclaim the gospel to someone.

So much extra meaning is brought out when examining the Greek. We are commanded to GO and PROCLAIM WITH OUR MOUTHS the Gospel of Jesus Christ to ALL people in ALL the world

Hopefully these thoughts will be helpful to you in seeing that you and I are commanded to GO and teach the gospel, and that EVERYONE should be given a chance to accept it or to reject it.

The “Daily” Great Commission

How often do we as Jesus’ disciples wake up each morning planning to share the gospel with someone? The answer to this question may show why we are not fulfilling the Great Commission like we should. Whenever we do not plan to do evangelism, we do not do it!

The work of sharing the gospel should be a priority in the Christian’s life. Is this true in your life? If you were to take the time and think about how you use your time each day, how many minutes would be used serving the lost?

Let’s think for a moment about what Jesus tells us to do.

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15 NASB).

This verse tells us that we need to share the gospel with everyone. It shows us that we have work to do. But why is it when we leave the house in the morning for work, school, and recreational activities that we forget that nearly everyone we see needs the Lord? Evangelism should be our main work! As we leave for work, are we thinking about how we can share the gospel with someone there? When we go to school, are we praying about opportunities that we will have to talk about Christ? Every part of our daily lives should be done with evangelism on our minds. Is this the case for you?

The Great Commission, or Omission?

The Great Omission?

It would be interesting to hear what people think would be the most
disobeyed verse in all the Bible. The flip side of that might be just as interesting.
Possibly the most obeyed verse in all the Bible is Luke 9:20-21.

“He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.” 21 And He strictly warned and commanded them to tell this to no one” (NKJV).

Matthew 28 is often called the “Great Commission,” but could it be
more appropriately called the “Great Omission?” What do you think?

The Fishless Fisherman’s Fellowship

This is a VERY well made video of a modern parable about evangelism.

The Parable of the Lifesaving Station

On a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often occur there was once a crude little lifesaving station. The building was just a hut, and there was only one boat, but the few devoted members kept a constant watch over the sea, and with no thought for themselves, they went out day or night tirelessly searching for the lost.

Many lives were saved by this wonderful little station, so that it became famous. Some of those who were saved, and various others in the surrounding areas, wanted to become associated with the station and give of their time and money and effort for the support of its work. New boats were bought and new crews were trained. The little lifesaving station grew.

Some of the new members of the lifesaving station were unhappy that the building was so crude and so poorly equipped. They felt that a more comfortable place should be provided as the first refuge of those saved from the sea.

They replaced the emergency cots with beds and put better furniture in an enlarged building. Now the lifesaving station became a popular gathering place for its members, and they redecorated it beautifully and furnished it as a sort of club.

Less of the members were now interested in going to sea on lifesaving missions, so they hired life boat crews to do this work. The mission of lifesaving was still given lip-service but most were too busy or lacked the necessary commitment to take part in the lifesaving activities personally.

About this time a large ship was wrecked off the coast, and the hired crews brought in boat loads of cold, wet and half-drowned people. They were dirty and sick, some had skin of a different color, some spoke a strange language, and the beautiful new club was considerably messed up. So the property committee immediately had a shower house built outside the club where victims of shipwreck could be cleaned up before coming inside.

At the next meeting, there was a split in the club membership. Most of the members wanted to stop the club’s lifesaving activities as being unpleasant and a hindrance to the normal pattern of the club.

But some members insisted that lifesaving was their primary purpose and pointed out that they were still called a lifesaving station. But they were finally voted down and told that if they wanted to save the life of all various kinds of people who were shipwrecked in those waters, they could begin their own lifesaving station down the coast. They did.

As the years went by, the new station experienced the same changes that had occurred in the old. They evolved into a club and yet another lifesaving station was founded.

If you visit the seacoast today you will find a number of exclusive clubs along that shore. Shipwrecks are still frequent in those waters, but now most of the people drown!

My friends, this is what happens when a church loses its focus on the mission God gave her. He called us as His church to preach the gospel, not to be social clubs that are more concerned with how our buildings look and how comfortable we are. People are dying out there and going to Hell! Let’s allow this parable to be the ‘wake-up call’ we need to get out and share the gospel with the lost!
